History of Sasan Gir Wildlife Sanctuary

It was acknowledged as Sasan Gir National park in the year 1975. It grabs the merit of being the first forest where huge numbers of Asiatic lions were found in natural habitat. Tropical dry deciduous forests mainly comprising of teak trees, grasslands, thorny scrublands and a semi-evergreen riverine are a feature of Sasan Gir National park.  Besides the teak and banyan trees being the dominant flora other species include the Sirus, Charal, Jambu and Vad.

This park is famous for harboring Asiatic Lions and Leopards in large numbers. The spotted deer or Chital, Indian Porcupine, Hyenas, Jackals, Chinkara, Crocodiles and Antelopes make up for the rest of the fauna.

The Park experiences a moderate climate with pleasant winter and hot summer. The temperature rises to maximum of 43°C and drops to a minimum of 10°C. Monsoon showers between the months of June and September.

Best time to visit Sasan Gir Wildlife Sanctuary

Months between November and June are considered to be the best time to visit the park not only because they make the tour comfortable but also because the park’s migratory birds arrive during winter.
